Staffing is all about hiring the right people with the right skills at the right time.
Making sure you hire well is so important. Committed, motivated, qualified employees help your organization achieve its purpose. Like other non-profit organizations, you cannot afford to be short-staffed. Limited financial resources mean that hiring mistakes can be a huge financial burden. Hiring the wrong person is a poor use of resources for recruiting and orienting a new staff member. Plus, the cost is compounded when a hiring mistake erodes employee morale, disrupts your office and perhaps even causes a valued employee to quit. Repairing the damage can take a lot of time and effort.

· Hiring an Executive Director
In most organizations, the board is responsible for hiring an executive director. The executive director is responsible for hiring all other staff and may delegate that responsibility to the appropriate manager. Accordingly, this section of the HR Toolkit deals primarily with the steps an executive director or manager will need to follow to hire an employee. See the section on Hiring an Executive Director for more information on what a board needs to know when hiring an executive director.
