Low-Cost Marketing

Often times, for small businesses, marketing effectively may mean high-costs internally or outsourcing the duty to others. Both of these can be detrimental as you either pay more money than you really can afford or lose control of a vital process. But marketing does not have to be this way.

Often times, for small businesses, marketing effectively may mean high-costs internally or outsourcing the duty to others. Both of these can be detrimental as you either pay more money than you really can afford or lose control of a vital process. But marketing does not have to be this way. In fact, it can be relatively inexpensive if you approach it the right way. With that in mind, we present 10 ways to increase marketing and customer relations without the huge cost of large-scale ad campaigns.
  1. Business cards – you can get business cards printed for a fair price and can give them out to each new client you make a sale to. What's better is that you do not have to give them out separately from the sale of goods or performance of services – just slip them into the whole package.
  2. Keep a rolodex – make an entry for each new client you deal with. Include some personal information you have uncovered about them (such as a significant other, hobbies, kids, etc.) and follow-up during future conversations. This not only builds rapport but can open opportunities for future sales.
  3. Use your existing IT – Microsoft is a powerful tool for creating pamphlets, posters, or newsletters. All of these things create awareness and can be low in cost to create.
  4. Cross-market with partners – does your friend own a company in a separate line of business? Including your business card in their pamphlet, and vice versa, is a great way to get your name out to new potential clients while building business relationships – all for a low cost!
  5. Vehicle advertisements – this one is not for everyone but if you have any vehicles used exclusively for work then it is definitely a good option. Even when you are parked people will be able to see your company logo and phone number. You can make the signs magnetic so they can be removed/changed as needed.
  6. Online social media – the world is changing fast and online social media is a huge opportunity for businesses. Creating a Twitter account, Facebook page, and a LinkedIn account are not only free but also a great way to effectively market your company. LinkedIn provides you with the opportunity to 'connect' to potential clients and set up open house type events or question and answer events.
  7. Sponsorship – you can be a sponsor in a charity event or with a youth sports team. This not only advertises your company but associates it with the overall good of the community.
  8. Small, frequent ads – each ad will cost substantially less than a larger ad,  however, you have successfully put your name out there more times and on a consistent basis which is much more valuable and helps to develop brand recognition.
  9. Open houses – allow customers to come see what your business is all about and see how you operate. You can also use this time to discuss their opinions on your products or services and get some free feedback.
  10. Trade shows – this stream may be a bit more expensive than the aforementioned, however, it is no less effective. People come to these shows specifically to find something new. Setting up a booth and displaying your offerings is a great way to network and add some potential customers at the same time. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce of Small Business Centre to see if they have any upcoming shows.
