Helen Purdy

What are you surprisingly good at?

Being a good listener and motivator. I am part of a support group that deals with cancer-related issues so it is really important to be able to listen to people’s stories and help them keep their heads up in difficult situations. I enjoy helping others, so much that I am in the process of getting involved with another support group!

What are you most passionate about?

Living life to the fullest each and every day. Since I’m involved with the support group, I see a lot of patients dealing with the loss of family members to cancer. This has taught me to not take life for granted and enjoy each moment. This also leads to my passion for my family. I have one daughter, four step-children, seven grandchildren – and counting! I love spending my spare time with them.

What’s important inside your community? Are you part of any organizations?

The support group I’m involved with is the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. There’s an online-based community called Cholangiocarcinoma Warriors. I also volunteer my time at the Princess Margaret Hospital, where I lend a helping hand and a shoulder to lean for those that are suffering from illnesses.

What do you feel have been the most important successes in your life?

Managing through difficult times and keeping a family together.

What are your favourite hobbies, sports team, and/or food?

Relaxation to me is baseball, hockey, and jigsaw puzzles. I like to travel when I can, and I always like pulling my family together so that I can spend more time with them. We often have reunions and try to keep close with one another.
