CRA is implementing new digital services that will be launched to the public in June of 2019, which will allow charities and their representatives to submit applications and returns more efficiently. The changes being made will affect forms T2050 (Application to Register a Charity under the Income Tax Act) and T3010 (Registered Charity Information Return).

The change pertaining to form T2050 is an online registration option that will be released as an alternative to mailing. Additionally, in November of 2018, CRA started their T3010 transition by discontinuing the use of peel-and-stick bar code labels on the T3010 Charity Return. As of June 1st 2019, they will be launching an online version of the return, that can be completed by charities or their representatives.

Though they will still allow charities to paper file their return, CRA’s new online version will have numerous efficiencies over paper filing. For instance, the online version will allow multiple individuals to work on a return, as well as provide options to pause and save their work. In addition, it will lessen the time and cost of printing then mailing a paper copy to the charities directorate, as it can now be electronically submitted instead.

How to Prepare for these Changes:

To help prepare for these new digital services, charities should sign up for a “My Business Account” to access CRA’s portal. Those that already have an account for individuals and are an authorized official will be able to access “My Business Account” with your personal username and password. If you have not yet registered for “My Business Account”, you can do so at this link provided: My Business Account. Once the new digital services have been launched in June, charities will also be able to easily update their address, authorized representatives and post-registration amendments.

If you would like the most up to date information about the changes, as soon as they are released, you have the option to sign up for the charities electronic mailing list at this link: Charities Electronic Mailing List.We are excited by the new changes that CRA plans to implement and look forward to directly submitting returns to them, through their secure portal.
