Meet Carly Hornyak, a manager at RLB.
What is your role at RLB?
I am a manager at RLB on the Core+ Team. Our clients are predominantly owner-managed companies – I work with a lot of professionals (doctors, lawyers, veterinarians, dentists, etc.)
What does a typical day look like for you right now?
We’ve started going back into the office more regularly, so it’s starting to look a lot different than just setting up shop at my kitchen table! I like to start my day spending a bit of time catching up with my team while we are all settling in. That’s the best part of being back in the office – getting to chat with team members and be able to bounce ideas off each other throughout the day! From a workload perspective, my day is usually spread out across NTR file review, discussing ongoing NTR files with preparers, client compensation/tax planning, etc. I have a lot of great opportunities to shadow senior team members (including partners) on client meetings which means I get a lot of face time with our clients, which is something I really enjoy. I’m also one of the team members that has been more heavily involved in the COVID-19 wage subsidy work, which has been a great project to work on because I’ve met and worked with a wider range of RLB staff members and clients than just my own.
Tell us about yourself.
Outside of the office, you can usually find me spending time with family and friends, or indulging in one of my favourite hobbies! I’m an avid reader, and I have a wall of full bookshelves at home to show for it. I’ve even started a monthly book recommendation that I display at my desk for other RLB team members to consider. The goal is to start an RLB book club… any takers?! I also really enjoy watching a variety of sports in my downtime – soccer, football, and golf mostly. It is a family requirement to cheer for Manchester United (we even named our family dog Rooney) in the EPL. Sundays are meant for NFL football, and I will always cheer for the Baltimore Ravens, which causes some grief because my fiancé is a Miami Dolphins fan to the core. I’m also known around the office as being the biggest Rory McIlroy fan, so when we do the office Masters Golf Tournament pool, we know where my vote is going.
Can you tell us about your decision to apply to work at RLB?
I had gone to university with a number of classmates that started working at RLB for their co-op terms. They always said wonderful things about RLB and the culture, which always stuck with me. Before joining RLB I worked at a Big 4 accounting firm, and had so many different opportunities there from working in a number of departments from assurance to forensic accounting, and even internal risk management. When the pandemic hit and I was working more from home I started thinking about my future and what I wanted my career to look like, and I was pretty certain I wanted to make a return to public accounting. When I saw RLB was hiring, I decided to go for it and see what all the hype was about. It didn’t take long in the interview to start to understand what everyone had raved about, and I was so thrilled to get a job offer!
How would you describe your path to your current role at RLB?
I was hired as a manager in Core+ and I am so happy with my role. When I started I was a little bit nervous that I may not have experience in all of the areas that a smaller firm would work with, but I was assigned a mentor on my first day and she was always available to coach me through new experiences. I was able to participate in the annual goal-setting process and through that, I was assigned LD leaders that were there to support me work toward my professional and personal development goals. Over the last year, I have learned so much and that is in large part to the amazing mentors that I’ve had. I’m really looking forward to being able to pass that along to staff as I start to take on mentorship roles!
What inspires you to come in every day?
It’s honestly the clients and our team members! Working for owner-managed companies, it always feels so rewarding when you are able to provide help or advice to clients that really has an impact on their lives – it really feels like I make a difference. And a big part of helping our clients to the best of our ability is working as a team. I am so grateful for my team – everyone is so friendly, welcoming and open to help each other. We recently shuffled our desks around so a number of us sit in the same area now – it is a really great opportunity to collaborate and get to know each other in person (not just on Zoom)!
How did the recruitment process go for you?
The recruitment process was really smooth! I had two interviews, one first with HR and another with HR and two partners at RLB. They were very adamant that people were their biggest asset, and they made me feel very comfortable during the interview. I had constant communication with my HR contact, and any questions I had were answered either at the interview or subsequent inquiries. There was a lot of joy in my household when I got my offer letter!
What resources did you find most helpful when preparing for the interview?
I knew some members of the RLB team before I applied and was interviewed, so I did know a fair amount of what to expect at RLB. But I did look through the website to do a bit of research to see what RLB was highlighting on the blog, etc.
Do you have any tips you’d like to share with aspiring RLB Team Members?
It sounds cheesy, but really just be yourself. It’s really easy to fall into the trap of saying what you think the interviewer wants to hear, but what they really want to get a feel for is what kind of person you are and how you will fit with our team, because that is important! A lot of technical can be taught, and we have staff that are willing to teach! So if you come with a great attitude and are open and honest, you’ll have a lot more success that way!
